The so called Heurigen “10er Marie” is a listed building (under the protection of historic monuments) with its very cozy atmosphere in the 16th district of Ottakring, next to the old Ottakringer church, is considered the oldest wine tavern in Vienna and is one of the most famous wine taverns in Vienna, outside the famous wine places Grinzing, Sievering and Neustift am Walde. The tavern was already mentioned in documents in 1740.
The fine “Heurigen”-tradition is still maintained, many prominent guests have spent beautiful hours here – even today it is the meeting place of prominent artists and politicians.
Originally the Heurigen was owned by the family of wine-makers Haimböck. The name derives firstly from the address (Alt-Ottakring No. 10), and secondly from the landlady’s daughter Maria.
The history of Viennese viticulture is closely linked to the history of the city. Celts, Illyrians, Roman legionnaires – all of them have already made wine in Vienna. The earliest documented mention of Viennese vineyards date back to the 12th century. Today, Vienna is perceived as a separate winegrowing region worldwide, which is unique for a megacity.
Of course the good vines originate from the own production of the ‘Vineyard Fuhrgassl-Huber’. The delicious Buffet offers home-style cooking at its best, with the Schnitzel or casseroles being one of the special specialties.
This social evening will certainly be an experience in a rustic and cozy ambience.
